What Are Anal Skin Tags?

Anal skin tags are small folds of excess skin that develop around the anal opening.

They may develop from:

• previous hemorrhoids
• healed anal fissures
• pregnancy
• inflammation or swelling
• natural skin variation

While benign, some patients choose removal for:

• aesthetic concerns
• hygiene difficulty
• irritation during exercise
• discomfort with tight clothing
• confidence in intimate situations

Cosmetic removal can significantly improve both comfort and appearance.

A Precision-Based Approach, Built to Last

The anal region contains delicate muscles, nerves, and specialized skin. Cosmetic removal here is not a spa treatment, it requires surgical technique.

Dr. Kratz applies principles developed over two decades of colorectal surgery:

-Precise excision with preservation of surrounding tissue
-A smooth, natural aesthetic contour
minimal scarring

Just as important is what happens after the procedure. Swelling during healing is one of the main contributors to new tag formation, so every patient follows a structured aftercare protocol focused on controlling swelling in the first 72 hours, designed to protect your result, not just your comfort.

The goal is natural refinement, done once and done well.

The Procedure

Cosmetic anal tag removal is typically performed in-office under topical and local anesthesia.

Consultation- A private evaluation confirms removal is appropriate and checks for underlying conditions such as hemorrhoids or fissures that may have caused the tags.

Local Anesthesia- The area is gently numbed. Nitrous oxide (Nitronox) is available for additional comfort during the procedure.

Precise Excision- Tags are removed using delicate surgical techniques designed to create a smooth, natural contour.

Skin Refinement
Additional aesthetic refinement may be performed when appropriate.

The procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes depending on the number and size of tags.

Recovery- the first 72 hours matter most

Most patients recover quickly, and your recovery plan is designed with one priority: keeping swelling down, because controlling swelling during healing helps prevent recurrent tag formation.

You'll leave with detailed written instructions. The essentials:

Ice frequently. Cold packs for 10–15 minutes at a time, every 1–2 hours while awake for the first 48–72 hours.
Anti-inflammatory support. An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory plan, when medically appropriate for you.
Protect the area. Soft gauze, loose breathable clothing, no tight or abrasive underwear.
Soft, easy bowel movements. A daily fiber supplement with plenty of water — soft stools and gentle hygiene protect the healing skin.
Gentle hygiene. Rinse or shower after bowel movements when possible; pat dry rather than wiping. No scented wipes or harsh soaps.
Sensible activity. Light walking is encouraged from day one. Avoid prolonged sitting for the first few days and strenuous exercise for several days.
Mild swelling, spotting, and temporary unevenness are normal — swelling often peaks around days 2–4 before improving, with healing over 2-3 weeks. Most patients return to normal daily routines within a day or two.

You'll have direct access to our office throughout your recovery, with clear guidance on the rare warning signs that warrant a call.

Pair it with Tight and Bright

For many patients, tag removal is the first step. Once the skin has healed, the same area can be refined further with our Tight & Bright intimate restoration treatments — medical-grade aesthetics delivered by our licensed laser esthetician under Dr. Kratz's oversight:

Chemical and Laser brightening. Moveo GLO laser treatment and VI Peel to improve pigmentation and even skin tone.

Skin tightening. Everesse radiofrequency treatment to firm and smooth intimate skin.

Laser hair removal. Motus Pro laser for lasting smoothness in the treated area.

Surgical precision and aesthetic care under one roof — a combination you won't find at a med spa, and a level of anatomical expertise you won't find in an aesthetics chain.

Ask about Tight & Bright at your consultation, or book it as a complete package.

Surgical Insights and Answers

Does the procedure hurt?

The area is fully numbed with local anesthesia, and nitrous oxide is available for added comfort. Most patients describe pressure rather than pain during the procedure, with soreness afterward that's manageable with the aftercare plan.

Will the tags come back?

New tags can form, especially if swelling isn't controlled during healing or if an underlying cause like hemorrhoids goes untreated. That's why we pair precise surgical technique with a swelling-control aftercare protocol and evaluate for underlying conditions at your consultation.

Does insurance cover the procedure?

It is frequently, but not always covered. Self pay option is always available.  We will walk you through the process with clear expectations.

How soon can I return to work, exercise and intimacy?

Most patients return to desk work and daily routines within a day or two. Plan on several days before strenuous exercise, and we'll give you individualized guidance on intimacy based on your healing.

Can I combine tag removal with brightening or tightening?

Yes — many patients plan tag removal first, then begin Tight & Bright treatments once the skin has healed. We'll map out the sequence at your consultation.

Is the consultation really private?

Yes. Private consultations, a discreet office experience, and judgment-free care are the foundation of the practice.
